Appearances

World youth

He met his step sister, Yamaoka Yoshiko, and she'll ask him to meet his mom, Yamaoka Yumiko (World youth arc, chapter 32, pages 50 to 52).
Despite winning the summer interhigh when Hyuga was injured (World youth arc, chapter 32, page 49), just like everyone in Nankatsu senior high school, he wants to defeat Toho academy senior high school and get their first victory in the winters' nationals (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, pages 6-7), but they'll eventually lose to Toho in the final (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, page 28).
Selected to play for Japan youth for friendly matches, without Hyuga, injured during the finals of the senior high school national tournament, Wakabayashi gone missing, Tsubasa playing in the Brazilian pro league, and himself in a bad condition and falling into a slump, they'll lose their first friendly matches against Netherlands youth, said to be the strongest in Europe at the time, pretty badly, 0-6, as a result, he'll give up the captain's armband and stay on the bench for the second match, that they'll lose 0-7 (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, pages 29 to 43). Desperate to show a better performance, Japan youth will train in tears in the middle of the night, and be surprised to see Tsubasa who came to help them. Thanks to Misugi's advices for the defense, Hyuga playing thanks to a painkiller injection, and himself playing despite his slump, they'll show a better performance but will still have troubles because of Tsubasa's current condition which isn't perfect (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, pages 50 to 79). However, energized by the sudden appearance of supporters in the stadium, Tsubasa's condition will improve, Wakabayashi will also appear to support Wakashimazu to not take any more goals, and everyone to win this match (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, pages 80 to 87). He'll contribute in various ways, most notably by scoring a goal where Dick and Dolman will crash into each other, forcing them to leave. The match will end up with a victory 10-1 (The strongest opponent! Netherlands youth, pages 102-103).
He'll watch the broadcast of Tsubasa's match against Santana's Flamengo (World youth arc, chapter 6, pages 46-47), and seeing Santana tie, will be sure that Tsubasa won't leave things as they are (World youth arc, chapter 7, pages 24-25).
Along with Hyuga, they'll announce in the press conference that the members of Japan youth who were playing in senior high school won't join the J-league, prefering to focus on the youth national team, not only to win the asian preliminaries, but to win the World youth, being much more calm than Hyuga, but clearly explaining their motivation (World youth arc, chapter 10, pages 1 to 16).
He'll be selected among the 22 members participating in All japan youth first training camp (World youth arc, chapter 10, pages 17-18), and be named captain of the midfielders (World youth arc, chapter 11, pages 4-5). He'll send a letter to Tsubasa to give him news, good or bad, about the team, but the letter wil never reach him (World youth arc, chapter 14, pages 2-3), because Tsubasa had to leave his room (World youth arc, chapter 16, page 6), he'll most notably talk about the Real Japan seven, which he faced as a member of the first group (World youth arc, chapter 14, pages 14-15), not wanting to let them take their place because they have sacrificed their pro career to focus on All Japan youth (World youth arc, chapter 14, page 35), according to Ishizaki, he may actually be the one who wants to play against world class opponents the most (World youth arc, chapter 14, pages 42-43). However, he'll eventually be happy to see that Japan may be strengthened by these players who are certainly able, while Matsuyama will protest that 7 of their members will be excluded if they join, he'll answer that this is the only way if they want to be competitive against the world (World youth arc, chapter 15, pages 4-5). He'll still try to win, since it's only natural to try and aim for victory (World youth arc, chapter 15, pages 12-13), but him and the rest of his group will still lose to the Real Japan seven (World youth arc, chapter 15, pages 51-52), and after seeing that Wakashimazu improved his individual abilities in a short time by joining the J-league rather than focusing in the national youth team, he'll have doubts about his decisions (World youth arc, chapter 15, pages 72-73). Moreover, he'll be among the 7 evicted members because his soccer is no good without Tsubasa, but will have another chance for the 2nd round of the asian preliminaries (World youth arc, chapter 16, pages 14 to 17).
During the first round of the asian preliminaries, he'll travel all over the world, reasoning that since traveling all over the country to learn the soccer of each region was the basis of his soccer when he was little, he'll try to absorb the soccer from as many countries as possible, Thailand being among them, he'll send intel about Thailand youth, which will allow Japan youth to defend successfully against a technique of Thailand youth (World youth arc, chapter 21, pages 25 to 32). He'll also travel to Africa to learn their flexible, fast, almost wild soccer (World youth arc, chapter 25, page 63). It's around that time, when he was in Cameroon, that he'll write to his mother, to tell her that he's going to meet her (World youth arc, chapter 32, pages 53 to 55). His trips were funded by his father, and went in most asian countries, most european countries, most african countries and most south american countries including Brazil (World youth arc, chapter 29, pages 26 to 29), in Brazil, he'll see with Tsubasa a friendly match opposing Brazil youth to Uruguayan youth led by coach Rubens who will suffer a huge 0-10 loss, resulting in coach Rubens being fired and replaced by coach Matilda (World youth arc, chapter 29, page 86).
After arriving at the training camp (World youth arc, chapter 29, page 13), along with the other excluded members for the rematch against the Real Japan seven, just like the other members, he'll show real progress, showing at first that he enjoyed soccer when he forgot this feeling before when he was too hungry for victories, but also with backspinn effects on his balls, most notably the green cut pass as well as his usual magnificent through passes, he'll also score a goal. Gamo will stop the match before the end at 10-2, not allowing Kazuo to play as a field player, despite this, Gamo will allow them to come back to the team, and reveal that the true prupose of the Real Japan seven was just to be a sparring partner, since most of them can't play in the World youth, due to various cirumstances, most of them being age restrictions (World youth arc, chapter 29, pages 20 to 87). Just before the first match of the asian qualifiers, he'll notice Aoi's nervousness and reassure him (World youth arc, chapter 30, pages 2-3), which will make Aoi endure the stress (World youth arc, chapter 30, pages 16 to 18). According to Hyuga, he'll also show how much he improved mentally by asking to take a free kick and score against Saudi Arabia (World youth arc, chapter 32, pages 54 to 59). He'll notice how Tsubasa will keep control of his own play to make sure that his teammates can handle his play, and sometimes play at full power under specific circumstances (World youth arc, chapter 33, pages 2-3). Against China youth, he'll notice how Tsubasa was troubled what Pepe told him even though he didn't understand it and tell him to focus, but to no avail (World youth arc, chapter 37, pages 16 to 21). He'll show that he's a technician by tricking China youth's defense with the help of Misugi and helping Hyuga to score the last goal of the match (World youth arc, chapter 38, pages 28 to 33). He'll then ask Tsubasa to reveal what Pepe said, which will make everyone want to train to match Tsubasa's real pace (World youth arc, chapter 39, pages 3 to 9). They'll qualify to the World youth after winning against Iraq youth (World youth arc, chapter 42, pages 8 to 11), and will be Tsubasa's best partner through the end of the final against Korea youth (World youth arc, chapter 43, page 29).
After learning that the World youth may be cancelled because of a civil war in the host country, Burunga, he'll remember that he travelled to Burunga since it was supposed to be the host country (World youth arc, chapter 45, pages 2-3). With the World youth finally held in Japan instead, he'll visit his mother on his last day off before the World youth (World youth arc, chapter 46, pages 1 to 6). Because of the silent and awkward atmosphere, Yumiko's husband will be nervous and Yoshiko will complain about her mother and him keeping silent, making the meeting look like a first formal marriage interview. However, the two of them will eventually open up and be satisfied about the meeting. Going back with Yoshiko to the bus stop, he'll accept Yoshiko's request, to reveal to everyone that he is Yoshiko's brother. However, Yoshiko will fall from her bycicle when leaving and he'll save her from an incoming truck, ending up injured himself (World youth arc, chapter 47, pages 12 to 21). His life won't be in danger, but he won't be able to participate in the World youth, and his playing career will be in jeopardy (World youth arc, chapter 47, pages 25-26). Everyone will want to visit him, considering he wanted to play in the World youth the most, but Hyuga will answer that it wouldn't please him, and that they should work hard to fill the gap instead, and Tsubasa will suggest praying for him at the Mt. Fuji, since it was his idea in the first place. Doctors will operate him successfully, sure that he'll be able to stand on the field again with a steady rehabilitation, as everyone will pray at Mt. Fuji for him (World youth arc, chapter 47, pages 33 to 37). his father will let him choose if he wants to be taken care of by Yumiko, just like he decided on his own to go to France and when to go back to Japan, but he'll want to be alone at first to sort out his feelings (World youth arc, chapter 48, pages 2 to 5). Eventually meeting everyone, he won't bear any ill will to his step sister, even saying that a brother has to rescue his little sister. Yumiko's husband will be thankful that he saved Yoshiko. Yumiko will apologize to him for not doing anything for him, but he will answer that he was certainly on Yumiko's mind all these years since Yumiko asked to take care of him when he was 12. Seeing this accident as an opportunity to catch up, he will accept to be in Yumiko's care, and Yumiko's husband will even be impressed by him showing so much strength and kindness after such a terrible accident (World youth arc, chapter 48, pages 14 to 17). At his mother's home, despite having a 99% probability of not playing in the World youth, he will still make great efforts to train late at night and get stronger, for the 1% that is left (World youth arc, chapter 50, page 19).
He'll watch the World youth from his mother's home in Sendai (World youth arc, chapter 51, page 7), and will notice that the supporters made banners wishing for him to come back (World youth arc, chapter 52, pages 2-3). He'll feel really frustrated in the first half of the first match by Mexico youth's domination, and will end up going kicking the ball outside during half time despite his injuries (World youth arc, chapter 52, pages 82-83). During the match against Uruguay youth, he'll leave the house (World youth arc, chapter 54, page 44), to meet Azumi, who will give him a list of doctors from all over the country who had results in sports medecine, to see if one of these doctors could help him with his injury, and allow him to play in the World youth (World youth arc, chapter 54, pages 54-55).
