His name comes from Japanese folk singer and songwriter born in Hokkaido Matsuyama Chiharu, whose Takahashi is a fan of. The lyrics of one of his song are in the end of the first Captain Tsubasa manga series, as Tsubasa is leaving for Brazil.

The real-life club of Consadole Sapporo officially gave the fictional character the jersey number 36, as part of the Matsuyama Hikaru project, to get funds for the club.

The headband he's wearing sometimes is called a hachimaki in Japan, and is a symbol of perserverance, effort and/or courage.
